Exhibition at the Musée Marmottan

Around Monet'sImpression sous le soleil levant, which earned him the name Impressionist, solar masterpieces by Durer, Rubens, Turner, Courbet, Boudin, Pissarro, Sonia Delaunay, Miro, ...

On November 13, 1872, Claude Monet painted a misty view of the port from the window of his hotel in Le Havre. Exhibited two years later under the title Impression, soleil levant (1872, Paris, Musée Marmottan Monet), the work inspired critic Louis Leroy to coin the term Impressionist, and gave its name to the group formed by Monet and his friends.

In 2022, the Musée Marmottan Monet celebrates the 150th anniversary of Impression, soleil levant, the jewel in its crown, and pays tribute to it with the exhibition "Face au Soleil, un astre dans les arts" from September 14, 2022 to January 29, 2023.

Albrecht Dürer, Luca Giordano, Pierre-Paul Rubens, Claude Gellée dit "Le Lorrain", Joseph Vernet, Mallord William Turner, Gaspar David Friedrich, Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Camille Pissarro, Paul Signac, André Derain, Maurice Denis, Félix Vallotton, Laurits Tuxen, Edvard Munch, Otto Dix, Otto Freundlich, Sonia Delaunay, Vladimir Baranov-Rossiné, Joan Miró, Alexandre Calder, Otto Piene, Gérard Fromanger and Vicky Colombet are just some of the masters gathered to celebrate art history's most illustrious sunrise.
