Splendours of Uzbekistan's oases
Louvre Museum
This exhibition takes us to a crossroads of civilizations, to the heart of Central Asia, to Uzbekistan, where the names Samarkand and Bukhara resonate. But many of the country's other trading oases have also revealed works of art now classified as World Heritage by
heritage.
This exhibition presents a large selection of these masterpieces, which have never been taken out of the country and have been specially restored, including monumental wall paintings from the ambassadors' palace in Samarkand and the surrounding region, pages from a book on the history of the art of the region and a number of other works.gion, pages from one of the oldest monumental Korans of early Islam from Katta Langar in Sogdiana, and other treasures in gold from Bactria (Dalverzintépé), silver, silk and ceramics. The exhibition also features masterpieces of the famous 16th-century Bukhara school of miniature painting.
Thanks to exceptional loans from leading European museums, the exhibition brings together some 130 works, inviting us to take a journey through space and time. This account of seventeen centuries of fabulous history shows how this region on the borders of China and India fascinated Alexander the Great, as well as the caliphs of Baghdad, beyond the Iranian world to the east.
