A&M: The challenges of battlefield robotization for military leaders

In the spaceof ten years, military robotics has gone from being a simple concept to an essential component of the air-land and naval battlefield .

Nevertheless, the possibility for a military leader to use robotic means to delegate action raises the question of the control of these machines and the place of Man in their controlled and responsible use.

In fact, their use will continue to grow, as they become ubiquitous in tactical and strategic arenas, increasingly autonomous and more precise than human beings in carrying out their actions.

For the military leader, this talk will look at the many challenges posed by the inexorable robotization of the battlefield:

- What advantages does robotics offer the military?

- What are its uses on the battlefield today, and what are its current limitations?

- How autonomous can these systems be, and what can Artificial Intelligence contribute?

- What impact will this have on military command?

Gérard de BOISBOISSEL is a research engineer at the Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan military academy's research center (CReC Saint-Cyr), and director of the Observatoire Enjeux des Nouvelles Technologies pour les Forces. He works on the challenges of new technologies for the armed forces, especially land forces, but also internal security forces, and organizes and monitors research projects on the following multi-disciplinary programs: Robotization of the battlefield, Artificial Intelligence in the service of Defense, and the augmented soldier.
