Byblos: eternal city exhibition

Byblos, which linked the Lebanese coast, Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Aegean world from the earliest antiquitý, forged unique links with the Pharaohs of Egypt around the cedar trade

The history of the world's first international seaport: Byblos, which linked the Lebanese coast, Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Aegean world from the earliest antiquitý forged unique links with the Pharaohs of Egypt around the cedar trade (the resin was used for mummification). It played a major role in the spread of the Phoenician alphabet.

Nearly 300 exceptional works, displayed in a spectacular scenography, will immerse you in an epic story that began more than 8900 years ago. Discover the latest discoveries of the ancient port and the fruit of the most recent excavations, including a Bronze Age necropolis that has survived exceptionally intact.

Listed as aUNESCO World HeritageSite, Byblos is one of Lebanon's oldest cities.

The treasures discovered in the city's royal necropolis and temples in the early 2nd millennium BC are one of the highlights of the exhibition. A selection from the tombs of the kings of Byblos, Abi-Shemou and Yapi-ShemouAbi is presented: gold and silver tableware, gold ornaments inlaid with semi-precious stones, mirrors, ceremonial weapons... Many of these pieces show a strong Egyptian influence; some even come directly from Egypt, as gifts from the pharaohs Amenemhat III and IV. The votive deposits of the Temple of the Obelisks are no less rich: earthenware figurines, gold and silver fenestrated axes, ceremonial daggers, jewels..., accompany an impressive procession of hundreds of bronze human figurines, sometimes plated with gold.
