The Academie de l'Air et de l'Espace conferences continue!
Dominique FOURNIER, Flight Test Engineer at Airbus Helicopters, will talk about his job as a rotary wing tester (X3, Racer,...) and Yves KERHERVE, former test pilot at Dassault Aviation and Member of the Académie de l'Air et de l'Espace, will give us an overview of his 30 years of flight testing, on both military and civil aircraft. See flyer in PJ.
The job of test pilot is a "small job". There are probably fewer than a hundred active test pilots in France. Some work for the French government, at DGA EV, others for manufacturers such as Airbus, Dassault and Daher. Of course, it's all about testing prototypes that have never flown, but also derivative aircraft, modified or with new configurations. In practice, he always has a team, and the main pairing is the pilot and the INE: Ingénieur Navigant d'Essais. The role of this pair is to understand, explain and translate into technical terms the elements experienced in flight during testing, and to contribute, during discussions with the program engineers in the design office, to finding the right technical solution, testing it in flight, etc. The test pilot also plays an important role in customer relations, and in promoting the product to potential future customers.
