Picasso - Rodin

2 artists, 2 museums, 1 exhibition-event

For the first time, the Musée Rodin and the Musée National Picasso-Paris are joining forces to present the "Picasso-Rodin" exhibition-event.

This exceptional partnership between two great monographic museums offers an unprecedented look at these genius artists, who paved the way for modernity in art. Their masterpieces are presented simultaneously in the two historic buildings that house these national museums.

The exhibition invites visitors to re-read the works of Rodin (1840-1917) and Picasso (1881-1973), two great artists who had a lasting impact on the artistic practices of their time, for generations to come. The aim is not to show what Picasso borrowed from Rodin, but rather to examine the significant convergences between Rodin's work and several periods of Picasso's production.

This cross-reading of their works is divided into different chapters on both sites, at the Musée Rodin on the one hand, and at the Musée Picasso on the other. through the crisis of representation at the beginning of the20th century, and at the Picasso museum through the creative processes employed by both artists. At different times and in different contexts, Rodin and Picasso played a decisive role in history, and this is undoubtedly one of the keys to their similarities.

In their own ways, they invented a new mode of representation, Rodin's expressionist, Picasso's cubist. For Rodin, as for Picasso, the studio was a privileged space for experimentation with forms and materials. Serial work, fragmentation, assembly and detour were all singular and innovative approaches. The artist's work, in perpetual motion, explores a motif in constant metamorphosis.

Through a systematic dialogue, this exhibition of over 500 works - paintings, sculptures, ceramics, drawings, archival documents and photographs - invites visitors to take a fresh look at their prolific and innovative artistic careers.
